You sound...

This week we were engaged recording our audio personal presentations and publishing them in our blogs as the first post.

Students ranging from 2nd. to 6th. HS years had the task to present themselves and record the audio. All students got the same short task description with few constraints as possible (personal information protection guidelines were discussed previously). A short tutorial was available only for beginners.

From the shared document "The Topic List".
The topic list document is a Google Drive Document managed by the teacher and shared with all the students. It contains short task descriptions and marking criteria.

All students went through the process of "decoding" the task description. Although the above text looks short, it contains several disperse keywords and phrases, the students have had to find. For those used to learn with "fill in the blank" kind of exercises, the "decoding" was a challenge. We took several minutes to dialogue about the task, about my expectations for good results and about the difficulty level the students perceived in the task. In the first minutes, all student´s interventions were questions, until some answers began to show up (answers were provided by students, I only intervened offering meaningful clues). The first answers pointed out the location of keywords in the task description, from where the decoding process speed up fast.

The talking lead to actions:

Juan wrote down some ideas before recording his voice. He chooses to use vocaroo.com (see computer screen) to record his personal presentation and download the MP3.

Martin used the Windows Sound Recorder and needed a file conversion before continuing. Martin learned from Juan how to use an online file converter. They used Zamzar.com

More advanced students recorded their personal presentations using multitrack sound editing software.

Students finally went on-line and published their audio presentations in their blogs. At the moment, students blogs are closed to our school community.
